Οι περισσότερες εφαρμογές που αναφέρεις παραπάνω τρέχουν χωρίς πρόβλημα σε οποιαδήποτε διανομή. Η μόνη που μπορεί να δημιουργήσει πρόβλημα είναι το vmware. Αν χρειάζεσαι αποκλειστικά το ίδιο, δες σε ποιές διανομές τρέχει χωρίς πρόβλημα (kernel module γαρ), αν πάλι μπορείς να το αλλάξεις, δοκίμασε vbox ή kvm που τρέχουν παντού. Η κάρτα γραφικών σου είναι επίσης ένα μικρό εμπόδιο. Αν είσαι ικανοποιημένος με την απόδοση των ανοιχτών drivers, τότε δεν πρέπει να παίξει ρόλο αυτό στην επιλογή διανομής. Αν θέλεις τους κλειστούς, με fedora/arch/debian testing/opensuse είναι σχεδόν σίγουρο ότι θα έχεις πρόβλημα κάποια στιγμή (δεν παίρνω όρκο για το opensuse).
Προσωπικά θα πρότεινα debian testing. Θα έχεις σχετικά πρόσφατες εκδόσεις προγραμμάτων (με εξαίρεση την περίοδο του freeze, αλλά λύσεις υπάρχουν και τότε) και προσωπικά το βρίσκω σταθερότατο. Αν όμως χρειάζεσαι τους κλειστούς drivers της ATI, αυτοί δυστυχώς αναβαθμίζονται με στόχο ελάχιστες διανομές (RHEL, SLED, Ubuntu), οπότε μάλλον θα πρέπει να πας σε Ubuntu ή κάποιο παράγωγο του RHEL (σε αυτή την περίπτωση η επιλογή μου θα ήταν Scentific). Δυστυχώς τα παράγωγα του RHEL έχουν αρχαία DE και παλιές εκδόσεις προγραμμάτων, κάποιες φορές ακόμα και σε third-party repos.

Μπορείς να δοκιμάσεις aptosid KDE. Θα χρειαστείς λίγο χρόνο (όχι πάνω από μερικές ώρες) να το φέρεις στα μέτρα σου.
Και να προσπαθήσεις θα δυσκολευτείς να το σπάσεις.

Εναλακτικά δοκίμασε mint (αλλά 2 φορές που το δοκίμασα κατάφερα να το σπάσω).

Πρόβλημα θα έχεις μόνο με το skype σε 64bit γιατί θα αναγκαστείς να κάνεις hack π.χ. How to get ready for MultiArch : http://www.aptosid.com/index.php?nam...ewtopic&t=2383

Το πρόβλημα είναι όπως είπα στο πρώτο μήνυμά μου ότι κολλάει το μηχάνημα (τελείως) κάθε 1-2 μέρες. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες δεν έχω αλλά μπορώ να κοιτάξω αν θέλετε (φυσικά να μου πείτε τι να κοιτάξω). Ο μόνος τρόπος να το επαναφέρω είναι κλείσιμο από το κουμπί τροφοδοσίας πατώντας το 5 secs. Τα χαρακτηριστικά του τα έχετε σε προηγούμενο μήνυμά μου. Εγώ μιλάω για άλλη διανομή μια που όσο και να έψαξα λύση δεν βρήκα - ούτε δείχνει η canonical να το διορθώνει.

Επιπλέον είδα ότι χρησιμοποιώ τον proprietary driver της ΑΤΙ. Δοκίμασα να τον βγάλω και να παίξω με τον default/universal αλλά επειδή έχω εξωτερικό monitor συνδεδεμένο κολλάει μόλις κάνω login (όχι του ίδιου τύπου κόλλημα - είναι σαν να τρώει φρίκη με την ανάλυση). Αν το συνδέσω το μονιτορ αφού μπουτάρει και πριν το login δουλεύει σωστά αλλά δεν το έχω τεστάρει αν κολλάει έτσι μια που δεν θεωρώ σοβαρή λύση να τρέχω να συνδέω το monitor αφού κάνει login.

arch είχα δοκιμάσει πριν πολλά χρόνια και είχα καταφέρει να το σπάσω. Επιπλέον δεν έχω κέφι σε περιβάλλον πίεσης να διαβάζω how-tos για το πως μπορούμε να εγκαταστήσουμε από κονσόλα xserver μετά DE κλπ

Μιλάω για λύσεις out of the box. Δεν με ενδιαφέρει να δω πως δομείται ένα OS.

Προτείνω να δοκιμάσεις να λύσεις το πρόβλημά σου όπως λένε τα παιδιά. Δηλαδή με τον κλειστό της nvidia και απενεργοποίηση της GPU intel. Αν θες οπωσδήποτε να πας σε άλλη διανομή προτείνω openSuse 12.3. Εύκολη εγκατάσταση, προρυθμισμένα τα περισσότερα και σταθερότατη. Βέβαια θα έχεις KDE και όχι unity αλλά κατά τη γνώμη μου είναι καλύτερο, ειδικά αν πρόκειται για δουλειά.

Το μηχάνημα έχει ATI Radeon τελικά. Μπήκα στο Bios μπας και έχει κάποια επιλογή για απενεργοποίηση δευτερεύουσας κάρτας γραφικών αλλά δεν είδα κάτι. Επιπλέον είμαι με τον proprietary stable driver της ATI όταν έχω τα κολλήματα.

Επειδή και εγώ μπερδέυτηκα. Τελικά θες να προσπαθησεις να λύσεις το πρόβλημα ή να βρεις άλλη διανομή;

Αν θες το πρώτο πρέπει να καταλάβεις πρώτα τι φταίει. Μπορείς μετά από το κόλλημα να δεις κάποια Logs για περίεργα μηνύματα. Υπήρχε σε gnome ένα utility αρκετά user friendly για αυτή τη δουλειά. Λέγεται gnome-system-log. Αν δεν είναι εγκατεστημένο μπορείς να το βάλεις. Για αρχή κοίτα τα

/var/log/messages
/var/log/dmesg
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/xorg.0.log

Αν θες κάποια άλλη διανομή πρέπει να δοκιμάσεις εσύ ο ίδιος να δεις ποια σου αρέσει. Απ' ότι κατάλαβα θες κάποια έτοιμη. Πρότεινα παραπάνω, αλλά αυτά είναι γούστα.
