DSL TOOLS v 3.9.6 (June 2001)
=============================

Thank you for choosing us as your solution for Internet access and
LAN-to-WAN connectivity.

The following information complements the printed documentation and the
companion Command Line Interface (CLI) reference manual, also with these
release materials.

This readme file covers the Windows application programs (DSL tools) for
this router. See the printed Customer Release Notes supplied with your
router for latest router firmware information and version information.

The areas covered in this readme:

I. CONFIGURATION NOTES
II. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE
III. KEY CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
IV. FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCEDURE
V. SAMPLE CONFIGURATION FILES
VI. KNOWN PROBLEMS
VII. DOCUMENTATION
VIII.TECHNICAL SUPPORT

I. CONFIGURATION NOTES
-------------------

This device may be configured using several different methods:

- Using Easy Setup from a web browser connected to the router's default
IP address of 192.168.254.254
- Using the Quick Start (QS) Windows application, which is installed from the
Installation CD
- From the console port using the Command Line Interface (CLI) (requires
console cable to be connected)
- From a Telnet session connected to 192.168.254.254, again using the CLI

Web Easy Setup GUI
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The simplest method is to use your web Browser and connect to the built
in web GUI and run the Easy Setup application. To access the Web GUI, connect
to 192.168.254.254 and use the user name 'login' and the password 'admin'.
Be sure to set your PC's IP driver to use DHCP to get an IP address from the
router before trying to connect.
Follow the prompts and enter the values provided by your Network Service
Provider. If your PC is on a different LAN, type at a Window's DOS command
prompt: route add 192.168.254.254 x.x.x.x, where x is the PC's IP address.

MS Windows Quick Start
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

If you have MS Windows, the router can be configured by using the Windows
Quick Start program. Install the software below to do this.
Quick Start sets default data VPI, VCI based on model number read from
the router to:
ADSL CAP - 0*38
ADSL DMT - 0*35
ATM - 0*35
SDSL - 0*38
SHDSL - 0*38
IDSL/FR - 16 (DLCI)

For routers that support voice: the default VPI/VCI are model specific, but it's
typically 0*39. If the unit is frame relay, 22 is the default DLCI.

Command Line Interface
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

In some cases the command line interface is desired.
The command line interface must be accessed via the console port or via a
Telnet session to 192.168.254.254, the default router address.
All commands are documented in the above mentioned CLI document.
The scripting feature of the router can be used to customize routers by
submitting commands for a preset customer installation. See the SAMPLE
CONFIGURATION FILES section below for examples.

Passwords
-=-=-=-=-
We strongly advise you to change the router's default administrative
password. The default password is "admin".
Not changing this password leaves your router open for hackers to
reconfigure your system including turning off the IP filters, firewall,
encryption etc.
You are automatically prompted to do this when you first connect to the
router using the Quick Start program. Just enter a new password in the
Login Password dialog.

II. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE
-----------------------

How to install the DSL Tools:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=

Run the SETUP.EXE program by:

Under Windows 95, 98, or NT, select the START | RUN button and type:
For DSL GUI:
D:\DSL\SETUP.EXE, where D is the CD ROM drive.

Then choose a directory to install the DSL Tools or use the default.
Do not install over a prior or existing version.

This software is compatible with Windows 3.11 as well as Windows 95, 98
and NT. In these environments, it runs as a 16-bit application. Only 8.3
file names are supported.

to easily upgrade or backup firmware and configuration files. See the
Command Line Interface manual, Chapter 6, Software Kernel Updates for details.

The firmware on the router is automatically backed up to the PC when the
router first connects. The file created on the PC is called kernel.f2k
It's in a directory called Sxxxxxxx where x is the router's serial number.

V. SAMPLE CONFIGURATION FILES
--------------------------

If you selected install the documentation and samples when the GUI was installed
a set of sample configuration files are copied to the SAMPLES subdirectory.
These cover several products and are discussed in the Customer Release
Notes. These files contain CLI configuration commands that can be copied
to the router and run with the EXECUTE command. See the Customer Release
Notes for how to run scripts. Be sure to select the correct sample file
for your configuration. Each file will probably need some edits to make
it fit your network settings. The files are as follows:

VI. KNOWN PROBLEMS
--------------

Windows applications:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

There is a Windows 95 problem if two Visual Basic applications (Quick
Start and Port Monitor) are running concurrently and you then close both
applications. If the first started application is closed first, you may get
a "General Protection Fault" or "Access Violation" error, or your system
may hang. Microsoft has a patch available (oleupd.exe), which you can
download from the Microsoft site (ftp.microsoft.com).

The TFTP server may fail if you are running the AdsOff Windows 'TSR' that
filters out banner ads. Disable this product if you need to reload
firmware in the router.

There is a Win98 install bug that may block connecting to the router using GUI
after installing Win98 with Personal Web server and Front Page 98.
The Personal Web server installs a down rev version of the winsock.dll into
the \Windows directory. Copy the \windows\winsock.old file to the \dsl
directory and rename it winsock.dll as a work around.

VII. DOCUMENTATION
-------------

The Command Line Interface Manual is included on the release CD.
The file USERCLI.PDF is in Adobe Acrobat format. You will need the freely
available Acrobat Reader to view and print this document. If you don't
have the Acrobat Reader already installed on your system, you can download
it from Adobe's Web site (http://www.adobe.com/). The Acrobat Reader is
available for a very wide range of platforms, including Macintosh, OS/2
and many Unix systems.

The manual describes how to configure the router using the Command Line
Interface and includes additional details on various advanced topics, as
well as a list of time-stamped system messages.

VIII. TECHNICAL SUPPORT
-----------------

Should you have any difficulty installing or operating the product,
feel free to contact Technical Support.

Before you call please try to gather a trace file. If you can connect to the
router with Quick Start, select "Help" and "Technical Support Data" from the
menu. This will produce a file that can be used to analyze the problem.

If you can't connect to the router but are able to use the console interface,
use the "Tools | Terminal Window" menu and then select the "Technical Support
Data" item, or alternatively if you are using the Terminal or HyperTerminal
applications that come with Windows or any other terminal emulation program
(use the parameters: 9600, 8,N,1), type "system support" and copy and paste
the result into a file.

Contact the Technical Support staff using the information in the Customer
Release Notes or the organization that installed your service.
