Although Canon provides linux drivers for some of their printer models, the ppd files included in these provide very limited info about the printers' capabilities.
A ppd file is used to describe to CUPS a printer's characteristics so it can allow us to adjust them.
For Canon iP4300 the ppd only provides one possible resolution (600dpi) and lacks many other settings.
This ppd which I compiled from Canon's original ppd and various sources from the internet (especially the iP4200 and MX310 patched ppds) adds to the original ppd:
- More Resolution Settings (from 600 dpi to 4800 dpi)
- Quality Settings
- Halftoning Settings (error diffusion / dither pattern)
- Grayscale print option
- Borderless printing on A4, 4x6in, 4x8in, 5x7in, 8x10in
- Vivid Photo support
- Settings for colors, intensity, contrast, brightness
Unfortunately I haven't tested it enough so I can not guarantee it works well.
To test it just add a new printer through cups and as a driver select this ppd.
Of course you should have Canon's official drivers already installed.
