    Thanks friends for the help. I do apologize for the delayed reply. Unfortunately this has been a big big challenge with Cosmote.

    So... one and a half years ago Cosmote started putting the fiber cables. At first just at street level, and soon after the fiber (or most likely: The tube that they will put the fiber in) was attached to our building.

    It has taken more than a year to get this fixed. The Comote website said all this time that FTTH was available. But..when signing up, they refused saying that it is not. While the actual fiber was already at the building!

    Only recently they allowed the signup. And indeed, some work was needed with the building to get a Cosmote box installed at every floor. Then 3 (!!) more visits home to install the cable duct, the tube, the fiber and in the end add the GPON box and connect everything. Since last Friday we, finally, have service. Hallelujah! That only took 18 months to set up.

    Went with the 100Mbit product. Using the voucher that is a very reasonable price, though I did notice that they charge a different (higher) price if you want to apply the voucher. Without the voucher you get more discounts. So the actual benefit of the voucher is smaller than it should be. Sneaky sneaky..

    It turns out that they want us to re-use the old VDSL Speedport Plus. That one still terminates the VLANs, PPPoE and handles the VOIP phone service. Which is a pity because I hoped to get rid of this unstable chinese Speedport product. So .. a question.

    I have an Asus RT-AX58U router. This box supports PPPoE and I'm assuming VLAN's as well. Would I be able to connect the GPON directly to the Asus WAN port as long as I copy the VLAN and PPPoE config? Would the PPPoE password be the same as my general Cosmote password?

    Then for the VOIP...I was wondering what would happen if I connect the Speedport to my internal LAN. Would it accept a DHCP lease from my Asus router & the VoIP work that way? I'd love to just set up the VoIP using another SIP client but unfortunetaly I don't know the Cosmote VoIP/IMS credentials..

    Thanks!

    FTTH install

    Hello friends,

    Apologies for the English - my written Greek isn't great.

    We have been using Cosmote DSL for over 10 years. First ADSL at 2Mbit, then 8Mbit, 24Mbit and currently on VDSL. Got 'forced' to upgrade to Fiberspeed 50 a few years ago...but are still only syncing at around 22Mbit. For most usecases that would be enough, but the main problem is the line instability. CRC and FEC errors go up regularly, especially when it rains (!!), causing high latency which makes working from home (VPN, Remote Desktop) almost impossible at times. VoIP calls (Teams, Zoom) I do them over 4G on the phone because its more stable. Cosmote has visited more than once to measure the DSL lines...but found nothing.

    So recently the OTE guys have been digging the street and the Cosmote website says that FTTH is available. Finally! So, for the people that have done the upgrade from VDSL to FTTH already.. I have a few questions. Hope somebody would be kind enough to share their experiences :)

    First, the contract. Can I stay on the 50Mbit contract but switch to actual fiber (and remove the VDSL)? 50Mbit would be enough but I'm expecting they want us to pay extra and upgrade to 100Mbit (Even though we already have been paying extra for a 'fiber speed connection' which in the end was only a bad VDSL line :( )

    The fiber cables (or pipes anyway) seem to be available at the street but not our apartment building. I don't think other neighbors have yet signed up for FTTH. When we sign up for FTTH will Cosmote install the fiber in the building downstairs, or also make sure that it is installed at our apartment on the 4th floor? Will that cost extra? Are there any installation costs for this process at all?

    Since I do need the connection for work its very important that there will not be any downtime. Do they normally install the fiber connection next to the old VDSL, and only disconnect VDSL when the fiber is working? DIs there something I can do to make sure that there wont be too much downtime?

    Apologies for so many questions! I find the Cosmote website somewhat unclear on these topics so I would rather ask the experts on here. Your help is much appreciated!

    Απάντηση: OTE Conn-X 2Mbit --> Conn-X 24Mbit

    Lets put the things in some order.
    When you say "it stopped working" you mean that your modem doesn't synchronize at all with the ADSL or it's synchronized anf you don't have internet access?

    The DSL signal was lost. The modem does not connect through PPPoA, does not 'train' at a certain speed (ie 2048 or 8192 Kbit), basically has no connection to the DSLAM. Changing the connection method to PPPoE did not change that.

    Now that I am thinking about the compatibility you mentioned, the ADSL2+ DSLAM's are not compatible with ADSL1 modems, but ADSL2+ modems are with the ADSL1 DSLAM's. This is the definition of backwards compatibility. A newer device is compatible with the old technology, but you can't ask an old device to be compatible with new technology.

    Are you sure? I know it is a different situation, but in Holland where I used to have ADSL, the ADSL2 DSLAM was able to be "backwards compatible" and run in ADSL1 mode. So even though the modem is old, the DSLAM (which is new) is able to run in the "old ADSL1 mode". Maybe it is different for OTE?

    Thanks!

    Απάντηση: OTE Conn-X 2Mbit --> Conn-X 24Mbit

    Hallo and welcome :welcome:

    Tech support is right. Your current equipment is not compatible with the ADSL2+ standard which the 24Mbps lines comply. If your modem supported the ADSL2 standard, you could use it temporarily at 8Mbps until the new equipment arrives.

    But now, you have to wait the new one to have internet access again.

    Hi Seitman, thank you very much for the welcome and your help! :oneup:

    I was under the impression that when the DSLAM has been provisioned for ADSL2, it would be backwards compatible with older ADSL1 modems. It would not work on 24Mbit, but at 8Mbit or lower (Because this is the maximum for ADSL1).

    Does OTE not allow to use ADSL1 modems with an ADSL2 line? Or could it be another issue, like PPPoA/PPPoE authentication?

    OTE Conn-X 2Mbit --> Conn-X 24Mbit

    ...first of my apologies for writing in English. While I try to learn Greek, I am not yet at the level of being able to have a technical discussion in Greek. :oops: So I hope you guys won't mind that I post this in English..

    At our house in Greece we used to have OTE ADSL, a very old package at 2Mbit without any additional data or voice services. Nowadays even the fast 24Mbit packages are cheaper, so we decided to 'upgrade'. We were told in the OTE store this would be active in a few hours.

    A few hours passed, a few days passed...and I had to leave for work abroad. I had only just left and my girfriend called to say the internet had stopped working. Right now it has been off line for a day.

    The tech support says it has to do with the modem, we have the old Thomson 530 ADSL(v1) modem. They have sent an ADSLv2 modem but it will take days to deliver. And I doubt this is the problem: Should an ADSL2+ connection not work at 8Mbit ADSLv1 with an old modem?

    From searching on the OTE site I found some installation instructions and noticed that PPPoE should be used. Our modem is configured with PPPoA. Over the phone I explained how to change this setting in the Thomson modem to PPPoE...leaving a few fields blank (access concentrator?)...but nothing. It does not work.

    Does anybody here have any experience with moving from 2Mbit OTE to 24MBit Conn-X? Should the Thomson modem be able to work at 8Mbit, or could there be something wrong with the line? Or is the Thomson modem indeed unable to connect when the line is provisioned for 24Mbit, and do we really have to wait for the new modem to arrive?

    Thanks guys! And again I apologise for the English. I hope you (And especially the moderators) do not mind.
