Former president Joe Biden diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer

Former president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office said Sunday, adding that Biden’s family is deciding on treatment options for a condition it said can be managed.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule,” said a statement from Biden’s personal office. On Friday, Biden was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had metastasized to the bone, it continued.

The statement said the diagnosis “represents a more aggressive form of the disease,” but that the cancer appears to be sensitive to hormone therapy, “which allows for effective management.” It added, “The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

The news comes at an extraordinary moment for Biden, 82, and his party, as Democrats in recent days have been second-guessing their handling of the 2024 election, especially the aging Biden’s insistence on running for reelection until a stumbling debate performance forced him from the race.

By the time he fumbled his way through that debate with now-President Donald Trump in late June of last year, other major party figures had taken a pass on challenging him, leaving Vice President Kamala Harris little time to prepare for a race she ultimately lost. The publication of new books this year has reopened impassioned debate among prominent Democrats about Biden’s decision to run, his mental and physical fitness as he served and sought a second term, and whether his inner circle hid health news from the party and the public.

There is no suggestion of any connection between Biden’s cancer and the verbal and physical struggles that prompted questions last year about his ability to serve another term.

Trump, 78, would supplant Biden as the oldest president in American history if he serves a full term, and Democrats have raised questions about his age and capacity, just as Republicans repeatedly did about Biden’s.

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social website Sunday.

Harris wrote on X on Sunday that she and her husband Doug Emhoff were “saddened to learn” of Biden’s diagnosis. “Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery,” she added.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among men, especially older men. While it usually grows slowly and initially remains confined to the prostate gland where it may not cause serious harm, some types of prostate cancer can be aggressive and spread quickly to other parts of the body, including the bones.

The pathology report gave Biden’s cancer a Gleason score of 9 — in which 10 is the highest number possible — according to the statement from his office. A Gleason score reflects the appearance of cells under a microscope, and a high score indicates that many look malignant and not like normal prostate cells, said William Dahut, the chief scientific officer for the American Cancer Society.

Dahut, who is not one of Biden’s doctors, worked until 2022 at the National Cancer Institute and ran the prostate cancer program. “Once it spreads to the bones, in general we no longer consider this a curable cancer, although there are therapies that are very effective at treating the cancer,” Dahut said.

Typically a patient is treated with a hormone therapy that blocks the production of testosterone, which helps the cancer grow, he said. “He could definitely live many years with this. There’s a wide range of how long people can live with metastatic prostate cancer,” Dahut said. “In the most aggressive cases, under a year, but there are reports of people living 15 or 20 years, too.”

In February 2024, Biden’s physician released a summary of his health following an annual checkup in which he declared no major new concerns and said the president “continues to be fit for duty.” The summary did not mention any prostate issues, nor did previous summaries from his presidency.

The report highlighted several issues that Biden’s medical team has addressed over the previous year, including Biden’s stiff gait, sleep apnea and a root canal. He continued maintaining a healthy lifestyle, not using any tobacco products, not drinking alcohol and working out at least five days per week.

His report did not include a cognitive portion, which was in line with medical guidelines but was notable at a time when his memory and cognitive abilities were under scrutiny and would only become more so as the presidential campaign intensified.

Otis Brawley, a medical oncologist at Johns Hopkins University who treats patients with metastatic prostate cancer, said it would not be surprising if previous prostate exams or screenings while Biden was president failed to turn up indications of cancer “We need a better test,” he said.

Cancer has been a recurring part of Biden’s personal and political life. He dedicated much of his later career to cancer research after losing his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015. Biden spearheaded a “Cancer Moonshot” aimed at fueling progress against the disease in tribute to a son whose devastating loss was rarely far from his mind. His anticancer efforts provided a moment of bipartisanship when he worked closely with Republicans, including then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), to win passage of the 21st Century Cures bill.

Despite ascending to the pinnacle of American politics, Biden’s life has been marked by tragedy. His first wife and an infant daughter died in a car crash in 1972, shortly after his first election to the Senate. After Beau, whom Biden saw as his political heir, died in 2015, his other son, Hunter, descended into a spiral of drug addiction.

Two of Biden’s closest friends during his decades in the Senate, Edward M. Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) and John McCain (R-Arizona), died of brain cancer in 2009 and 2018, respectively. Those losses contributed to Biden’s reputation for personal empathy, which became a central part of his political image.

McConnell announced that the Senate would rename the law’s cancer program after Beau Biden, a moment that caused Biden to tear up as he presided over the Senate chamber as vice president.

“He’s known the cruel toll this disease can take,” McConnell said of Biden. “But he hasn’t let it defeat him.”

Against that backdrop, Sunday’s announcement was particularly dramatic, and politicians from both parties were quick to offer Biden their support.

“I am saddened to hear of President Biden’s cancer diagnosis and am wishing him and his family well as he begins treatment,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) wrote in a social media post.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) added, “Susan and I are saddened to hear about President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis and are praying for his full recovery.”

Sunday’s news came at the end of a remarkable six years — and a particularly wrenching week — for an American figure who has spent a half-century in politics.

Democrats nominated Biden for president in 2020 in large part because he was a reliable, well-established figure who seemed to have the best chance at defeating the unorthodox Trump, a feat he pulled off to great plaudits from the party.

Biden never promised to serve only one term, but many Democrats believed that was implied, especially after the president vowed to be a “bridge” to the next generation.

In a May 8 appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Biden and his wife, Jill, pushed back at any claim that his aides hid a significant cognitive decline from the public. “They are wrong. There’s nothing to sustain that,” he said. Biden’s office has also noted that none of the books or critics allege that any of Biden’s decision-making or actions were hampered by his condition.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware), a close friend of Biden’s who has known him for years, said in an interview that the diagnosis was difficult for those who are close to the former president.

“He’ll lean into and take this treatment and this path forward with the full support of his family and those who have long admired him and his grit and ability to get through hard times,” said Coons.

“The timing is particularly hard,” Coons added, pointing out that May 30 is the 10th anniversary of Beau Biden’s death.

Το θέμα με την Ford είναι ότι δείχνει το πόσο όλοι ειναι απροετοιμαστοι και γιατί δεν το κάνεις έτσι, εν καιρώ ειρήνης.
Φυσικά και το θέμα logistics είναι survival of the fittest. Όποιος το λύσει πρώτος θα έχει πλεονέκτημα.
Αλλά μέχρι τα logistics chains να φτάσουν στα επίπεδα ποιότητας και τιμής των ξένων, θα κλάψει κόσμος.

Εγώ πάντως θα κρίνω μόνο μετά από έξι μήνες. Μέχρι τότε αφήνω τα πανηγύρια στους MAGA. Μεχρί τότε έχουμε καταναλωτές σε πανικό, προιόντα στις αποθήκες κτλ κτλ.

Και ναι ο κόσμος αλλάζει και για μένα αυτό ειναι το και το επίσημο μήνυμα από τα theatrics του trump. Το ερώτημα είναι αν θα αλλάξει για το καλύτερο; Οι μάγκες έχουν αποφασίσει αλλά εγώ δεν το πιστεύω. Μόνος μου καημός να ξυπνήσει η Ευρώπη αλλά δεν είμαι και τόσο σίγουρος. Σε κάθε περίπτωση πολύ φοβάμαι ότι αυτός ο κόσμος που αλλάζει πάει για βιαιες αλλαγές. Ειδικά οι εκτός Αμερικής μάγκες, αναρωτιέμαι αν το σκέφτονται αυτό.

Ο Τραμπ έκανε το checkup του τον Απρίλιο, οπότε όλοι οι πρόεδροι κάπου τότε το κάνουν (μάλλον). Λογικά και ο Μπάιντεν το έκανε τον Απρίλιο του '24 και δεν είχε ευρήματα.
Τώρα το κάθε πότε πρέπει ένας 82χρονος να πηγαίνει στον ουρολόγο δεν το ξέρω, αλλά λογικά είτε 6μηνο είτε 12μηνο θα είναι. Αν προβλέπεται σε αυτήν την ηλικία.

Μέχρι τον Ιούλιο του '24 (3 μήνες, ας πούμε, μετά τον τελευταίο επίσημο έλεγχο), θεωρούνταν ικανός να διεκδικήσει νέα θητεία ως Πρόεδρος. Συνέχισε να θεωρείται ικανός (σωματικά και πνευματικά), απλά απέσυρε την υποψηφιότητά του...because reasons.

Από τότε μέχρι τώρα, από το 0 πήγε σε μεταστατικο καρκίνο...σουρ.

Δεν είχε ενοχλήσεις/δυσκολίες στην ούρηση πόσο καιρό πριν, δεν είχε ανεβάσει κανένα δείκτη, δεν είχε τίποτα...πριν ένα μήνα τα βρήκαν όλα, ξαφνικά, στο ετήσιο checkup.

Εννοείται ότι τον Πρόεδρο τον κοιτάζουν μια φορά το χρόνο, στα 80+ του...δεν έχει συχνοτερους ελέγχους, έστω και τυπικά αίματος...δεν είναι να πεις ότι ήταν και σε κανένα σημαντικό πόστο.

Λογικά περίμενε να του έρθουν τα παραπεμπτικά στο gov wallet/health, για αυτό τους ξέφυγε.
