The Kunpeng Desktop Board is said to be compatible with mainstream hardware such as memory, hard drives, and network interface cards, but somehow there’s no mention of graphics card support. I suppose some will work, as it would be hard to make a desktop PC without video output…

The chip comes in at a massive 30B transistors on a 7nm manufacturing node - if Amazon is using similar high density libraries to mobile chips (they have no reason to use HPC libraries), then I estimate the chip to fall around 300-350mm² if I was forced to put out a figure.

Άλλο LPP (ARM/mobile), άλλο HPC (high-end CPU/GPU). 3x density το πρώτο, 2x το δεύτερο.
Ο Zen1 δεν ήταν σε 14nm LPP και απορούσαν διάφοροι γιατί δεν κλοκάρει ψηλά;

https://www.forbes.com/sites/moorins...-gen-instances
I was expecting a follow-on upgrade to the A1 instances announced at last year’s AWS re:Invent, maybe an “A2”, but nothing like the company announced with the AWS Graviton2. AWS is dead-serious with this new chip, and I don’t say this lightly. First off, this is a new 6th generation EC2 set of instances that starts with Graviton2, not what I saw as a “pipe-cleaner” with A1 instances announced last year. AWS doesn’t mess around when it comes to new instance generations, and it's not messing around with M6g as it literally compared head to head with the current M5 instances.
Here's something else I find impressive. Arm released N1 IP in February of this year and AWS is launching a fully designed and manufactured part based on that IP some 10 months later. This is not what one expects to see from a silicon design, development and manufacturing cycle. Literally unheard of.
...
Folks, this is very much a “big core” with some very special features like native fp16 for ML inference and always-encrypted memory. Call me impressed.
Graviton 2 servers support 8 DDR4-3200 channels of always-encrypted memory via AES-256 with an ephemeral key and up to 1Tbit/sec of compression memory acceleration.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Web_Services
Revenue $25.6 billion (2018)
Operating income $7.2 billion (2018)
As of 2017, AWS owns a dominant 34% of all cloud (IaaS, PaaS) while the next three competitors Microsoft, Google, and IBM have 11%, 8%, 6% respectively

Jassy also showcased new “Inf1 Instances” designed for machine learning/AI workloads and again powered by customer Arm-designs.
These demonstrate 3X higher throughput than G4 instances powered by NVIDIA chips, he said, and cost a claimed 40 percent less. (The offering comes integrated with TensorFlow PyTorch et al.)

https://www.servethehome.com/aws-gra...ntel-betrayal/
AWS for all practical purposes declared war on Intel as it announced its new Graviton2 CPU. Some of the reports recently on the new chip, that the entire industry knew was coming, were strange focusing on incremental improvement positioning the chip against 2021’s Intel Xeon Ice Lake-D generation. Instead, AWS has signaled to Intel that its chips are not good enough. This is a big deal because Intel has been creating custom SKUs for AWS and has been subsidizing sales to AWS through its enterprise and SMB segments. Now, after that investment, AWS is poised to betray Intel.
...
With the AWS Graviton2, the company is targeting not just the lower-end of the stack, but instead the heart of Intel Xeon CPUs. In the 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable series, 12-20 Xeon cores are considered mainstream and Graviton has more Arm cores with greatly increased IPC. By selling its own CPUs, Arm is able to also define a vCPU to equal or better Intel performance. That is the big deal that AWS saw early in its existence.
...
I have always maintained, if I am at Intel, AMD taking market share is the best case. Intel has gone through that cycle before exiting the Opteron era with a near-monopoly in the market. AWS ran on Intel Xeon for years when AMD and Arm were not in contention.
In contrast, the Arm-based Graviton2 is the worst-case scenario. Steep discounts in the hyper-scale market when there was little competition fueled AWS growth. In contrast, those buying enterprise servers tend to be higher-margin customers. With Graviton2, AWS is signaling that it is going to make Arm a first-class competitor to Intel in its infrastructure.
...
By positioning a product as a Xeon competitor, the AWS Graviton2 will shift the balance of power significantly and in a way that the original Graviton could not. AWS has effectively betrayed the Intel partnership in the Xeon monopoly era. Now that this is public, the next question is what other cloud providers will follow suit either publicizing their internal projects or partnering with one of the Arm server vendors for next-gen products. Competition is good for the industry and we are far from the “boring” days in the 2014-2017 era.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/aws-gr...nterprise-aws/
AWS isn't going to wait for the tech supply chain to innovate for it and is making a statement with performance comparisons against an Intel Xeon-based instance. The EC2 team was clear that Graviton2 sends a message to vendors that they need to move faster and AWS is not going to hold back its cadence based on suppliers.
...
AWS is looking to become the Apple of the cloud. AWS will have a choice of processors, software providers as well as services and instances. But AWS is putting its weight behind the 7nm Graviton2 processor because it can offer more value to customer via its own silicon and integrated stack. AWS' decision to build its own multi-purpose CPU rhymes with Apple's call to make its own chips.
...
Graviton2 required significant investment, but AWS can garner returns and improve its operating margins due to the ability to cut out middlemen involved with procuring processors, power savings due to Arm and efficiency gains from optimizing its own infrastructure.
In other words, AWS' Graviton2 launch may indicate that Arm in the data center is becoming a reality after years of false starts, delays, and hopes.
...
What if Graviton2 takes on a third of AWS workloads? AWS can cut its Intel spending and that can't be good for the chip giant's data center business. Given that AWS accounts for the bulk of Amazon's profit, the returns on Graviton could be magnified should more workloads go to Arm.
