pppoe gateway cable modem for cosmote?

Hey everyone,

first I apologize for speaking in English and not being able to search the forums since they are in Greek I'm sure there is info on this already.

Cosmote speedport router I currently have is unreliable and needs periodic restarts, putting additional fans on it doesn't help and talking to Cosmote support is super annoying and at best I'll get another router which will have the same issues in a year.

So I'd like to purchase my own.

I'm on their "Fiber" connection which is just adsl turns out
I'm running it with wifi turned off and in pppoe gateway mode since I have my proper router behind it.
Ideally I'd just get a small LAN only pppoe gateway to replace it.
Do you know which ones will work with Cosmote? Does anyone have experience with this?

Out-of-the-box and with auto-provisioning (for voip/telephony config),
only fritzboxes with fritzos > 7.20.
Otherwise, if you don't mind manual config (and/or you don't care for telephony service),
pretty much any modem/modem-router for xdsl (preferably with vectoring support) should work.

Yeah I don't care about telephony or auto provisioning, so xdsl and vectoring are my keywords (I'm not familiar with adsl tech so wasn't sure what to look for)

Clarification:
xdsl is a generic term for dsl types.
"x" might stand for: a(symetric)dsl, s(ymetric)dsl, v(erry high bit rate) dsl, and various other options.
First of all, make sure you know what type your connection really is.
For residential connections in Greece, the typical options are:
a) adsl (up to 50Mbps).
b) vdsl (50-100-200 Mbps, also referred to as "fiber", its only "fiber to the cabin" really...).
If you are on aDSL, and not interested on future-proofing,
an adsl (cheaper...) modem (should) suffice.
If you are on vDSL, you need a vdsl modem (those are backwards compatible with adsl),
with vectoring support,or preferably, and depending on connection speed, super vectoring/35B support.
200 Mbit connections need 35B support.
Unfortunately those don't come cheap.

Correction on the first reply:
For auto-provisioning support on fritzbox with cosmote you'll need fritzos > 7.00, not > 7.20 (7.20 being the latest).

quick update, it works.

main issue was VLAN tagging. I was getting DSL connection correctly but pppoe authentication was failing with no response from the server, managed to google out that router needs to tag its packages with VLAN ID 835 for them to be accepted. everything in order now,
