At least 57 Palestinians have starved to death in Gaza as Israel’s punishing blockade of food, water, and other critical aid to the besieged enclave stretches into its third month amid relentless bombardment.

Gaza’s Government Media Office said on Saturday that most of the victims were children, as well as the sick and elderly, condemning the “continued use of food by the Israeli occupation as a weapon of war” and urging the international community to exert pressure on Israel to reopen the borders and allow in aid.

Gaza has been under total Israeli blockade since March 2, video obtained by Al Jazeera Arabic showing large numbers of trucks carrying vital supplies piling up on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip on Saturday, the queue extending south beyond the city of Arish, located approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) from Rafah border crossing.

Al Jazeera’s team identified one of the latest victims on Saturday, a baby girl called Janan Saleh al-Sakafi, who died of malnutrition and dehydration in the Rantisi Hospital, west of Gaza City. More than 9,000 children have been admitted to hospital for treatment for acute malnutrition since the start of the year, according to the United Nations.

Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said he had witnessed heartbreaking scenes of children rifling through rubbish, “looking for whatever is left of canned food products”. The enclave, he added, had reached a “critical” point with international organisations out of supplies and community kitchens unable to prepare meals for displaced people.

“Finding a single meal has become an impossible quest,” Ahmad al-Najjar, a displaced Palestinian in Gaza City, told Al Jazeera. “People here have witnessed one charity after another declaring they’re out of supplies, that they’re shutting down their operations because they’re in no position to … offer the population the needed relief.”

“It’s frustrating and infuriating to have trucks piling up on the other side of the fence be denied entrance while the people, even children, are in dire conditions.”

Hospitals face ‘acute shortages’

Suhaib al-Hams, the director of the Kuwaiti Hospital in Rafah, said in a statement that medical services were experiencing “acute shortages in more than 75 percent of essential medicines”, with only around a week of supplies left.

He warned that most of the enclave’s medical services will stop without “immediate intervention” to reopen borders and allow medical and humanitarian aid through. He added that patients, who are “slowly dying every day without treatment”, needed to be evacuated urgently.

The continued blockade is the longest such closure the Gaza Strip has ever faced, and has come as Israeli forces continue bombarding the territory, killing at least 70 Palestinians and wounding 275 others over the two days spanning Thursday to Saturday morning, according to the Health Ministry.

On Saturday, two women were killed in an Israeli air raid on a house in the town of al-Fakhari near Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis, according to reports from Al Jazeera Arabic.

Separately, a fisherman was killed and another injured by an Israeli naval attack off the coast of Gaza City.

Later in the day, two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli drone attack on southern Gaza’s al-Mawasi area, once an Israeli-designated “safe zone”.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 52,495 people and wounded 118,366 since October 7, 2023, according to the Health Ministry. Thousands more missing under the rubble are presumed dead.

Israeli cabinet approves plan to capture all of Gaza and keep its soldiers there indefinitely
Netanyahu has called up tens of thousands of reservists to free up soldiers for ‘the next stage’ of war in Gaza

Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet has approved a dramatic expansion of Israel’s offensive against Hamas that would see the entire Gaza Strip captured and Israeli forces stationed there indefinitely.

The move was voted through in the early hours of Monday, two Israeli officials told the Associated Press. It would push hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to southern Gaza, likely exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis, and is expected to be met with widespread international condemnation.

Earlier, army chief Eyal Zamir said the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) were "increasing the pressure" to secure the return of hostages held in Gaza as the prime minister vowed to continue the war.

“This week, we are sending tens of thousands of draft orders to our reserve personnel to intensify and expand our action in Gaza. We are increasing the pressure to return our people and defeat Hamas,” the army chief said on Sunday.

He added that the Israeli military would “operate in additional areas and destroy all of [Hamas’s] infrastructure above and below ground”.

In a video message posted on X on Sunday, hours after part of a missile launched from Yemen by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia fell close to Israel's Ben Gurion airport, Benjamin Netanyahu said he was convening the security cabinet to discuss "the next stage" of the war in Gaza.

Mr Netanyahu has called up "tens of thousands" of reservists who will be deployed to Israel's border with Lebanon and in the occupied West Bank, replacing regular soldiers who will lead the new offensive in Gaza, news site Ynet reported.

The security cabinet also reportedly approved a new plan for aid distribution in Gaza, although it was unclear when supplies would be let in to the enclave.

There are three IDF divisions currently operating in Gaza, according to reports. The Netanyahu administration has repeatedly warned that if no new hostage deal is reached, the military would launch a major offensive aimed at eradicating Hamas.

Negotiations have failed to agree a new ceasefire for the release of 59 remaining hostages, out of whom 24 are believed to be alive.

The families of Israeli captives said that in moving to take the whole of Gaza, the military was “sacrificing” their loved ones.

"An overwhelming majority of the nation is united around the understanding that an Israeli victory cannot be achieved without bringing the hostages home. Losing the hostages would mean an Israeli defeat,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement.

"National security and social stability depend on the return of all the hostages – every last one.”

It added that the plan approved by the cabinet deserves to be called the "Smotrich-Netanyahu Plan" for "sacrificing the hostages", in a reference to finance minister Bezalel Smotrich and the prime minister.

Local media reported that the military expansion in Gaza will be implemented following US president Donald Trump’s visit to the region next week. Mr Trump will not travel to Israel itself, instead holding talks in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates in mid-May.

Hamas has accused Israel of abandoning an earlier phased peace deal, which expired in early March after talks broke down. Israel resumed its airstrikes on Gaza around two weeks later on 18 March.

The Israeli military has since intensified its bombing campaign and carved out wide buffer zones in Gaza, squeezing the 2.3 million population into an ever narrower zone in the centre of the enclave and along the coast and shutting off aid supplies.

So far, 192 hostages have been released through negotiations and Israeli military operations since November 2023. Most were abducted on 7 October 2023, when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel and killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel's retaliatory war has reduced much of the territory to rubble and killed more than 51,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in the Hamas-controlled Strip.

Over the weekend, the Israeli prime minister's office announced that Mr Netanyahu was rescheduling a visit to Azerbaijan, citing recent developments in Gaza and Syria.

The office, which also cited "the intense diplomatic and security schedule", did not announce a new date for the visit. Netanyahu had been expected to meet with Azerbaijan president Ilham Aliyev this week.

Al Jazeera has spoken with Peter Lee from the University of Portsmouth in England and Sultan Barakat of Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar about Israel’s use of loitering munitions in its war on Gaza.

Loitering munitions, also known as suicide drones, fly over locations until they locate a target and then fly into it.

“It’s very confusing actually because this kind of drone … can be used very precisely,” Lee said.

“It does seem they’re being used against civilian targets. Now the silence of the Israelis and Israeli army spokesman is quite telling here because in the past, they’ve said that there have been the presence of Hamas fighters or a command centre or some other justification for the attack on a particular place,” but that does not seem to be the case for recent attacks, he said.

In fact, there have been enough incidents recently to indicate that these drone attacks have not been accidents but rather authorised by someone on the Israeli side, Lee added.

The drones appear to be used as a scare tactic. They are able to fly over an area for hours to identify a target. “They’re designed to terrorise the Palestinians and to make sure that they do not feel normal in any way, even in their displacement,” Barakat said.

As Israel expands its bombing campaign across Yemen, Lebanon and Syria, these drones are “an alternative, relatively cheap way to terrorise the Palestinians and to keep them reminded of the fact that Israel is here and we haven’t finished our job”.

Regarding international law, using these drones “leaves Israel very open to the charge that they are deliberately targeting and trying to depopulate an area”; otherwise, it would make sense for them to show more restraint in their bombing campaigns of Gaza, Lee said."

Smotrich: Gaza will be ‘totally destroyed’ within months, population ‘concentrated’ in narrow border area

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich says that within half a year the Gazan population will be “concentrated” in a narrow strip of land between the border with Egypt and the Morag Corridor running the width of Gaza between Khan Younis and the border city of Rafah.

He adds that Gaza will “totally destroyed,” that the entire territory north of the Morag Corridor will be “empty,” and that in six months Hamas will not be a functioning entity.

The ultranationalist minister also says that Israel will “apply sovereignty” in the West Bank during the tenure of the current government.

“Within a few months we will be able to declare that we have won. Gaza will be totally destroyed,” Smotrich says at the “Settlements Conference” in the West Bank settlement of Ofra, organized by the Makor Rishon newspaper.

“In another six months Hamas won’t exist as a functioning entity… The population of Gaza will be concentrated from the Morag Corridor southwards. The rest of the Strip will be empty.”

Adds the finance minister: “The Gazan citizens will be concentrated in the south. They will be totally despairing, understanding that there is no hope and nothing to look for in Gaza, and will be looking for relocation to begin a new life in other places.”

Smotrich has been an ardent advocate of building new Israeli settlements in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas atrocities, as well as “encouraging” the emigration of Gaza’s civilian population out of the territory.

Asked about steps to annex the West Bank, the finance minister says, “It will happen this term. It is one of our most important challenges. We are at a historic opportunity.”
