Hi all,
First: you can answer me in Greek, since I'm able to at least speak it and slowly read it.
We just arrived in Athens, from Paris, with my wife, for a year. We need Internet (badly) and TV at home.
We are uphill in Zografou. You can message me @vadarf on Telegram too.
What we need :
- Internet 50Mbps or faster.
- HD TV with the usual shit, eg. bunch of international channels.
- Netflix
What we don't need :
- telephony
- bad customer service
I was looking at Cosmote brochure.
Questions : the "fiberspeed" is a marketing term for anything with speed > 50 Mbps ?
Do they test your line to check what's available ? eg. there is no point to subscribe to the 100XL or 200XL offer if the line cannot handle more than a few Mbps.
As far as I understand, when you subscribe to the FiberSpeed offer, it comes with their Speedport Plus router. Then, if you add the Cosmote TV option, they give you some STB ? What are the specs of this one ?
I don't know exactly how Netflix works, how do you connect your Smart TV to be able to watch the Cosmote TV channels and switch to Netflix ?
If there is/are other ISP with similar offers, tell me. I already had a look, and found that at least Cosmote was the easiest way to go.
Thanks guys
Stefanos

Hello and welcome to Greece. I hope you will enjoy the country.
First of all, this is not an official cosmote channel but it's a user forum where we people usually help.
Now to answer your questions briefly.
Cosmote is considered to be the most reliable service internet wise in Greece.
Secondly, I don't think you can have internet and TV without telephony.
Also you have to check to a local cosmote or Germanos shop regarding fiber availability at your residence.
If there is availability:
a) you can have cosmote TV via internet or satellite. I don't think there is a different charge
b) Netflix can be setup on your smart TV. Just get into the smart TV menu and set it up.
c) this means that you will have the Netflix on your TV and the cosmote TV at the sat/net box you will get from the provider.
I hope this helped.
My best regards and welcome to Greece!

Hi Lycos,
Thank you for your kind answer.
We have the same kind of non official forum in France, and there are often the best source of info (mostly because you have the real numbers, and sometimes some people who work or have worked with several ISP before, so they know their procedures, hidden rules, etc.).
The only unanswered question is how do you subscribe to an offer without knowing what will be the actual throughput of the connection ?
In France there is no such problem since there are 2 offers only : using copper (DSL) or Fiber Optic. Only with Fiber Optic you can sometimes choose your (downstream) throughput. On DSL, it's always the maximum possible (so you can have almost 100 Mbps if you're near the DSLAM, or 6Mbps if you live at 5 Km from it, you'll pay the same price (cheaper than here anyways).
I'll check at my local Germanos or Cosmote shop, which ever is the closest. Which me good luck, because when I went there in July to buy a SIM card to be inserted in a portable router, they couldn't help at all.
I almost don't have mobile phone signal here, even if I go out. Do providers sell femtocells ?
Thanks again for your answer.
S.

At the moment the only available solution is from Cosmote (assuming you have a Greek SIM from them):
Free of charge, and my recommendation (for compatible devices):

With charge (for all 3G devices):

Yes, "fiber" is a marketing term, all services are VDSL.
If you are lucky and there is a VDSL cabinet close to your address you will get the actual speed (50Mbps, 100Mbps etc)
Tell us what the availability check shows using your address:
https://www.cosmote.gr/selfcare/jsp/...etv.jsp?ct=res
It will not give you availability for the high speeds if there is no cabinet close to you.

Looks like using the unused number is not working (it says "nothing at all" which cannot be true)
Can you search by address instead?
Also, try Vodafone availability check, I think they do offer VDSL from cabinets in the Zografou area.

If you can't do it from the website (I can't find the english version), visit a Vodafone shop

If the result you got from OTE is accurate, it looks like you may have a vdsl cabinet closeby and can get up to 50Mbps.
Check the map on www.fttxgr.eu/map by highlighting “VDSL OTE” at the upper right corner of the map to see if there is a cabinet close to you.
There is a promo price at €35,50 / month for “Cosmote Double Play 50 L” which includes 50Mbps, unlimited greek landlines and 120 minutes to Greek mobiles.
Alternatively with €37,40 you can get XL which has 480 minutes to Greek mobiles & 30 minutes to international landlines.
There is a fee of €36,38 for the installation of a new phone line.
Note that the promo prices are for 2 year contract.
There will be a penalty of €130 for early termination.
Visit your local Cosmote/Germanos shop and ask for these prices. If they cannot give them to you, order on cosmote.gr
And confirm you will get the new modem “speedport plus”Τελευταία επεξεργασία από το μέλος ariadgr : 21-09-18 στις 09:30.

Hi everyone,
The OTE guy came this morning. Below the statistics of the line :
The statistics are good because of several factors : the apartment is at ground floor, so even if it''s old and the copper is of bad quality, it'is only a few meters to go down to -1. Then it seems that I'm really next to the DSLAM.
I couldn't find the address on the map to complete my profile (it's in Zografou). If someone wants to help, drop me a private message I'll give you my address.
Can this speed be upgraded ? I'm not sure it's worth it anyway.
Thanks for the help

Of course you can upgrade. I'm sure you can reach 100mbps because of 22 snr
Call them or go to Germanos shop and check it out.
